Spice Up Your Front Stoop

So, I really love a good front stoop!  If you don't have the privilege of living in a quaint English village or a posh neighborhood of the city, you can still jazz up your entry to make it welcoming and guest-friendly.  Here are some ideas for creating an inviting first view to your home:

1.  Add color: Don't be afraid to put a pop of color on your front door or its frame.  Just use a complimentary color to your home's current color scheme, even if it's a bold choice.

2.  Use nature to your advantage: Highlight your walkway, doorway, or steps with some beautiful shrubs and topiaries.  This doesn't have to be expensive if you just get a couple cute pots and add them as "frames" to the entry.

3.  Lighting is key: Make the front of your house stand out with lighting that brings the interesting features to the forefront.  You can add a nice lantern light above your door, some spotlights on your walkway, or a feature light on your address.

4.  Get stylistic with your accessories: If you have a certain style that you want to convey in your home right from the first step, try adding your flair with address numbers or a nice mailbox.  Use these little pieces of interest instead of gaudy lawn ornaments.  They'll give the approach to your home a cleaner, upscale feeling.

5.  Enjoy the space: Invite people over, sit on the porch, walk the dog on your street to admire your work, or set up a lemonade stand for the kids.  However you decide to spice up your front entry, make sure it shows who you are as a family and features your home in the best context--as part of your family's lifestyle.
